US expresses reservations over social media restrictions in Pakistan, the significance of carrying out a comprehensive inquiry into purported irregularities during the most recent general elections in Pakistan was stressed by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
Noting the importance of citizens having immediate access to social media, Miller stated, “We urge the government to uphold freedom of expression and we recognise the internet restrictions implemented by Pakistan.” Miller went on to say that while dealing with Pakistan, the US will always be the country that stood up for fundamental rights.
Additionally, the US made it plain that it would not interfere in Pakistan’s internal affairs.. “Our focus remains on supporting a transparent investigation into allegations of electoral misconduct in compliance with Pakistani law,” Miller said, restating Washington’s position.
He emphasised following legal procedures while expressing hope about Pakistan’s current government formation process.
